What are paving slabs and what are they used for?

Paving slabs are one of the core building materials that help you achieve the patio of your dreams. They are flat (usually square or rectangular-shaped), used for patio paving as well as to create pathways around your home’s outdoor spaces.

However, we do not recommend using paving slabs for driveways, as driveway block paving is designed specifically for this purpose.

What types of patio and garden paving slabs do you supply?

At Simply Paving, we have a wide range of paving slabs to suit any size and style.

In our natural stone collection, for example, we stock exquisite sandstone paving sourced directly from Rajasthan, an Indian region renowned for its high quality and beautiful natural veining. With rustic colour schemes and riven profiles, these pavers are a great choice to recreate that charming cottage garden feel – as are both limestone paving and granite paving.

If you prefer a more modern feel to your outdoor space, however, then look no further than our range of porcelain paving slabs. Not only do these sleek slabs bring a certain sophistication to any outdoor set-up, but porcelain is also extremely hard-wearing and non-porous. This means, as well as not needing to buy any expensive sealant, wiping away water-based stains is a breeze.

It’s not just your patio that can receive a Simply Paving-inspired spruce up, either. Our popular carpet stones and paving setts, inspired by the cobblestones or yesteryear, are perfect for pathways. Wind a walkway around your beautiful flower collections or lay a practical path from patio to shed to keep wandering feet off the grass.

Which garden paving slab sizes are available?

Within our paving collection, we offer a broad selection of paving slab sizes that can each dramatically change the look of your patio.

Our square pavers, including 450x450 paving slabs and 600x600 paving slabs, are a very popular choice for those seeking a clean and crisp paving area. This neat aesthetic is best suited to contemporary spaces that value uniformity over variation.

As for our rectangular pavers, such as Bradstone’s long aspect 800x200 StoneMaster paving collection, it’s all about creating the illusion of more space. It’s a subtle effect but one that really enhances any ultra-modern stylings of your outdoor space. You can even co-ordinate your driveway accordingly with our StoneMaster block paving range.

To create a traditional look you’ll want to use both rectangular and square pavers on your patio – which is super easy with Simply Paving’s handy patio packs. These collections include many different dimensions, combining effortlessly for a classical finish.

What colour patio slabs are in stock?

Simply Paving have a wide selection of patio slabs in different colours, shades and finishes to suit your paving style.

For a paving pigment that complements any aesthetic, opt for grey paving slabs. For example, our Bradstone Ashbourne Paving in weathered grey is perfect for a traditional theme, while our silver grey Pauta Porcelain Paving is ideal for a more modern motif.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to make a stylish statement with your patio, our black paving collection brings a bold finish to your outdoor space. Our distinctive Vetusto Porcelain Paving in blue-black, for instance, combines the traits of aged slate with a sophisticated shade to create an alluring and dramatic style.

You could even add a splash of rouge to your patio with our red and brindle paving collection. These rich earthy tones co-ordinate effortlessly with mahogany outdoor furniture, perfect for a sun-soaked al fresco area.

Can you paint garden paving slabs?

If you can’t find a finish to suit your preferences, then you might consider painting your pavers a completely different colour.

For this particular project, you will need special patio paint, which can be used on all types of pavers. This includes natural stone, porcelain and concrete paving. Just make sure that the paint you pick is non-slip, otherwise your patio slabs will become a hazard when slick with rain.

You should, however, ensure you are 100% certain about painting your patio slabs before you do so - once you have painted your patio slabs, the paint will be very difficult, verging on impossible, to remove.

How much are paving slabs?

From affordable paving slabs to luxurious pavers, Simply Paving caters to all budgets.

Porcelain paving, for example, is one of our most popular high end paving materials, with prices that range between £36-£64 per m2. The extra price pays off in the long run as porcelain paving has special qualities that other materials don’t, such as being easy to maintain and displaying long-lasting good looks.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is our Value Paving collection. These cheaper pavers range from £15-£26 per m2 and are the perfect budget-friendly paving solution. We don’t scrimp on quality in this range, either; our affordable paving boasts the same Simply Paving high standard of other products and can be used for all paving projects.

Can you lay paving slabs on building sand?

Laying paving slabs just on a bed of building sand is not enough to secure them in place. You should lay any paving slabs on sharp sand and cement, not building sand. You also need a cement mortar mix to guarantee the longevity of your patio slabs.

A strong mortar bed for laying paving slabs consists of 4 parts building sand and 1 part cement, which can be easily mixed together in a wheelbarrow or bucket.
