Porcelain paving FAQs

Here at Simply Paving, not only do we have decades of experience pairing customers with their perfect paving slabs, but we also know everything there is about porcelain outdoor paving!

Continue reading, below, to find out the answers to the most common questions we get asked about porcelain slabs.

What can I use porcelain paving for?

Outdoor porcelain slabs are an always versatile choice, able to create beautiful patios and pathways, as well as offering an indoor tiles solution. However, you shouldn’t use porcelain patio slabs on a driveway – instead, you need purpose-built block paving that can handle the weight of vehicles without cracking.

Don’t worry if you’ve got your heart set on a porcelain driveway though, we have plenty of porcelain external paving options in our domestic block paving collection.

What's the difference between ceramic, vitrified and porcelain paving?

Many manufacturers often use paving terms ‘ceramic’, ‘vitrified’ and ‘porcelain’ interchangeably. However, there are some subtle differences between these types of pavers.

For example, vitrified and porcelain slabs are designed for outdoor use. This is thanks to their clays being fired to a very high temperature that creates a hard and durable finish to stand the test of time.

Ceramic, on the other hand, can refer to a variety of materials, including porcelain slabs, some of which may not be suitable for outdoor use.

All in all, if you’re determined to choose ceramic paving for your outdoor space, then make sure the material is fit-for-purpose. Otherwise, play it safe with our range of beautiful and ever-reliable outdoor porcelain slabs.

How much does porcelain paving cost?

Here at Simply Paving, we offer our luxurious porcelain outdoor slabs at the most affordable prices possible, allowing everyone can bring this sophisticated style to their garden.

Our outdoor porcelain collections range in price, with plenty of budget-friendly choices available in our Alba, Rock and Cortile ranges of pavers. Each option is stunning, exceptionally durable, and (most importantly) affordable.

At the other end of the price scale, we have such high-end porcelain patio slabs as the Bradstone Madera Antigua and Serameno collections.

To find out exactly how many porcelain slabs you’ll need for your garden and get better idea of budget, head over to our paving slabs calculator page.

What colour porcelain paving is available?

From bold blues and black paving to softer neutral hues, you’ll find a diverse range of colours for your garden in our outdoor porcelain collection.

Those who prefer an avant-garde approach with a porcelain patio will no doubt adore our darker shades of pavers. For example, we feature many rich grey porcelain slabs, such as our silver grey porcelain patio tiles.

Alternatively, for a country cottage garden aesthetic, pave your porcelain patio with grey, beige or dark brown. We even stock porcelain external paving that replicates timber flooring. We especially love our Madera Grande porcelain pavers for delivering this rustic outdoor aesthetic!

How to clean porcelain paving?

Porcelain slabs are non-porous, which means you don’t need to spend time scrubbing stubborn stains or buying sealants. Instead, all you need is a bucket of warm, soapy water and a sponge to clean your porcelain patio. Easy!

To find out more about keeping your outdoor porcelain slabs in tip-top condition, take a look at our how to clean a patio guide.

Is porcelain paving slippery when wet?

Porcelain is rated as one of the least slippery surfaces available for paving slabs, ranking at an R13 anti-slip rating. This means that, even when wet or frosty, a porcelain patio offers a steady and gripping surface underfoot. For any more questions on the anti-slip properties of our porcelain outdoor slabs, you can find all the information you need by reading our tile slip rating guide.

How to cut porcelain paving?

Due to their durability and toughness, cutting porcelain patio tiles can be tough.  The only way to cut porcelain slabs is with a circular saw, specialist blade, and water feed.

This method requires specific safety equipment. Be sure to have the likes of heavy-duty gloves, safety glasses, and dust masks close to hand it attempting to cut outdoor porcelain pavers. For more information, head over to our how to cut paving slabs guide.
